Frequently Asked Questions

  • No! Most of my adult students are retired and many are in their 70s or 80s. I love teaching older students, whether they are embarking on a Latin journey for the first time or returning to something they enjoyed in high school many decades ago. If you are interested in Latin, you are not too old!

Also: I am not expecting the class to move at the speed of a college class full of bushy-tailed 19-year-olds The pace of each class is tailored to those in it.

  • No, but I may not be the right teacher for your child! I work only with students who are already very comfortable reading and writing in English. This typically means my youngest students are around 12, although there have been exceptions. There are Latin teachers out there who teach orally and may be happy to teach pre-literate children via the spoken method--I would recommend searching for teachers using phrases like "Latin as a living language" or "Latin via the direct method."

  • I am familiar with many textbooks and generally prefer using a mix of textbooks and homemade material with my students! Each textbook has its own strengths and weaknesses, so I think it is good for students to be exposed to at least two of them as they become more advanced.

As base textbooks, I am familiar with using:

    For Kids:

    Suburani (Hands up)

    Cambridge Latin Course

    Ecce Romani

Familia Romana (from the Lingua Latina per se illustrata series) (Ørberg)

    For adults:

    All of the above, plus:

    Wheelock's Latin

Latin via Ovid (Goldman & Nyenhuis)

    Introduction to Latin (Shelmerdine)

To supplement, I also often use:

Learn Latin from the Romans (Dickey)

    Scribblers, Sculptors, and Scribes (LaFleur)

    By Roman Hands (Hartnett)

38 Latin Stories (Groton, May, & LaFleur)

    and Latin novellas!

I select the primary textbook based on the level and interests of the class. If you are interested in using a particular textbook and/or are already using a particular textbook, please let me know! We may be able to build a class around your preferred book.

  • Size: Classes are generally limited to 10 students per class, but are usually smaller. Most classes are between 3-8 students and tend to be smaller at more advanced levels.

Length: Classes for adults are typically 90 minutes long and classes for children are typically 60 minutes long.

Rate: Depends on length of class and number of students but is typically between $25-$27 an hour. Scholarships or reduced rates may be available for those who are low-income. Please contact me for details.

  • Tutoring is best for those who would like to learn on their own or have a particular goal in mind. I offer tutoring on both a long-term and short term basis. For instance, you may choose private tutoring because:

You would like to learn Latin from scratch and would prefer to do it outside of a class environment

You want a curriculum structured for your particular needs and interests.

You would like support and guidance with using a particular textbook or reading through a particular text, like Familia Romana, Ad Alpes, or Wheelock's Latin.

You would like additional practice with a particular grammar principle, such as participles, and would like intensive one-on-one practice.

You would like to build your vocabulary and want help or guidance doing so.

Please contact me with a description of your needs and we can see if I am a good fit for you.

Note: Please also see my free resources to see if any of these would be helpful to you.

  • Private tutoring can work for either kids who want to learn Latin from scratch in a solo environment or kids who need support with Latin they are doing at school. Tutoring can be arranged for learning over the long-term or for just a few sessions if your child needs help only with a particular issue. Before initiating tutoring, I always have a (free) meeting with you and your child to make sure I understand what your needs are and for us to see whether I am a good fit for your child. Some reasons you may choose private tutoring include:

Your child simply wants to learn Latin and they want to do it outside of a classroom environment.

Your child is transferring to a school where they will be enrolled in a Latin class that is above their level and they need help getting up to pace.

Your child needs practice with a particular grammar concept.

Your child needs or wants to build their vocabulary.

Your child needs or wants extra reading practice outside of school.

Please contact me with a description of your child's wants and needs and we will go from there!
